Landscaping in Glen Rock, NJ

Glen Rock is smaller lots, older homes, and a borough that enforces fence height and setback rules. We design within the rules, pull the permit, and build patios and fences that fit a narrow lot.

Glen Rock, NJ

Working in Glen Rock

Glen Rock covers 2.72 square miles and takes its name from a 570 ton glacial boulder at Rock Road and Doremus Avenue. It grew around its rail stations: the 1905 station set off suburban building, and developers kept building through the 1920s. About a third of the housing dates to 1939 or earlier and about 48 percent to 1940 through 1969, so we work on a lot of colonial revival, Tudor, stucco, and Cape Cod houses with original stonework.

Diamond Brook starts in Ridgewood near the Midland Park line and runs through Glen Rock into Fair Lawn and the Passaic River. The Ho-Ho-Kus Brook also passes through the borough and joins the Saddle River at the Dunkerhook area, where Glen Rock meets Ridgewood, Paramus, and Fair Lawn. Yards on low ground near either brook are where we get the most drainage calls.

The zoning here is detailed. In the A-2 zone the rear yard setback is 30 feet and each side yard must be at least 12 percent of the lot width, with a 6 foot minimum. As of September 10, 2026, impervious coverage is capped at 50 percent of the lot, counting walks, driveways, patios, and AC and generator pads. We check each design against those numbers before we price it.

What we build in Glen Rock

Fence at the borough's 4 foot limit

Glen Rock limits fences and freestanding walls to 4 feet in most residential locations. Posts and gates may extend 6 inches higher, and up to 1 foot extra is allowed at dips in uneven ground. A 6 foot fence is allowed only along a line shared with a commercial zone or a nonconforming use. We build to those limits with the finished side facing the neighbor.

Fencing & Privacy

Evergreen screen behind a low fence

With fences held to 4 feet, most privacy in Glen Rock comes from planting. We plant a narrow evergreen screen inside the fence line and space it so it fills in without growing over the line. On corner lots we keep plantings in the sight triangle under 2 and a half feet, as the code requires.

Fencing & Privacy

Patio sized to the 50 percent coverage cap

A patio needs a borough site work permit, and it counts toward the 50 percent impervious limit along with the house, garage, driveway, and walks. We calculate coverage first, size the patio to fit between the house and the rear setback, and add low-voltage lights on the steps, with a licensed electrician making the power connection.

Hardscape & Lighting

Retaining and seating walls kept under 4 feet

Glen Rock's site work permit notes that retaining walls 4 feet or higher need zoning, engineering, and building permits, and freestanding walls fall under the same 4 foot limit as fences. We keep Glen Rock walls below 4 feet and terrace a larger grade change into more than one wall.

Hardscape & Lighting

Side yard drainage on an older house

Narrow side yards between older houses often carry roof water toward a basement wall. We run the downspouts underground to the rear yard or another approved outlet, regrade the side yard so it slopes away from the foundation, and add a channel drain where a walk blocks the flow.

Drainage & Excavation

Spring and fall cleanups by borough section

Glen Rock runs a spring cleanup pickup by neighborhood section that takes leaves, grass, and branches under 4 inches thick and 4 feet long, and fall leaf pickup goes by voting district. We time cleanups to your section's dates and cut branches to the borough's size limits.

Before you build in Glen Rock

Lots and soilGlen Rock is smaller lots with older colonials and capes and mature street trees. There is not a lot of room between the house and the line, so the layout has to be exact and the setbacks matter.
WaterThe Diamond Brook runs through the borough and the low ground near it holds water. Older homes have downspouts that dump at the foundation and narrow side yards that channel water toward the basement.

Permits and rules in Glen Rock

Fences, patios, walkways, driveways, sheds, and retaining walls are filed on the borough's residential site work permit with the Code Enforcement Bureau at 1 Harding Plaza. Zoning review happens before any construction permit is issued. For a retaining wall, the form asks for the maximum height, and walls 4 feet or higher also need engineering and building permits.

Since the tree ordinance passed on October 23, 2024, removing any tree 6 inches or more in diameter at 4 and a half feet on private property needs a permit, and each live tree removed must be replaced or paid for at $750 into the Glen Rock Tree Trust. The application must be in at least 15 working days before the removal date. We do not remove trees, but we tell you early if a design would affect one.

Glen Rock requires the finished side of any fence, wall, or trellis to face the adjoining property, and an arbor or trellis within 6 feet of a property line must meet the fence rules. We plan these details before the permit is filed so the layout does not change during review.

When to schedule work in Glen Rock

Fall leaf pickup runs by voting district, and the DPW adjusts the schedule depending on pile sizes, so we check the borough's updates before each cleanup. Homes on Maple Avenue, Prospect Street, and Lincoln Avenue, which are county roads, are asked to bag their leaves, and we bag them at those addresses.

Hardscape and fence work runs from spring through late fall. Tree permit applications need 15 working days, and replacement trees have to be planted within 12 months, so we schedule any planting that goes with a project for spring or early fall.

Questions

How tall can a fence be in Glen Rock?

In most residential locations, 4 feet, with posts and gates allowed 6 inches more. A 6 foot fence is allowed only along a line with a commercial zone or a nonconforming use.

How do I get more privacy with a 4 foot fence?

With an evergreen screen planted inside the fence line. Hedges are not held to the fence height except in the corner sight triangle, where they must stay under 2 and a half feet.

Does a new patio need a permit?

Yes, a site work permit. It also counts toward the 50 percent impervious coverage limit, which we calculate first.

What counts toward impervious coverage?

The house, accessory buildings, walkways, driveways, patios, AC units, generators, and pools. The limit is 50 percent of the lot as of September 10, 2026.

Can you build a 4 foot retaining wall?

We keep Glen Rock walls under 4 feet, because walls 4 feet or higher need engineering and building permits on top of zoning.

Do I need a permit to take out a tree?

Yes, for any tree 6 inches or more in diameter, filed at least 15 working days ahead, with a replacement tree or a $750 payment to the Tree Trust. We do not remove trees.

Which way does the fence face?

The finished side faces the adjoining property. That applies to walls and trellises too.

Should I bag my leaves?

If you live on Maple Avenue, Prospect Street, or Lincoln Avenue, the borough asks you to bag them. Elsewhere leaves can go to the curb loose or in biodegradable bags.
